Summary of Activities
Global Action Nepal (GAN) is a UK Registered
Charity whose chief focus is on educational and
social improvement throughout Nepal. Our major
project areas include teacher training, supporting
the education of disadvantaged children, building
adequate sanitation and water facilities, and
developing the skills of Nepalese youth. The information
below gives an indication of some of our major
project areas, but more detailed information about
our work can be found in the GAN Projects section
of our website.
Our Philosophy
We aim to work on behalf of the people of Nepal
and serve their needs as best we can, and to ensure
that they are properly consulted and involved
in any project that we do in their community,
and that there are sustainable mechanisms in place
to ensure the continuity and sustainability of
the project after GAN has left.
Our Partners
We work with a wide range of partners in Nepal
from a wide range of sectors centralised
and decentralised levels of government, NGOs and
community organisations, and International Organisations..
Our Working Areas
At present we have four working districts, namely
Solukhumbu, Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Kaski.
Our Projects
Our projects and work falls into three main areas:
|
Education
Teacher-training and development is
at the core of our educational work.
One of our major past project was
aimed solely at English teachers;
in recent times this has been expanded
to teachers of all subjects. We currently
work in over 60 schools in the three
districts.
The core of our teacher-training
programmes lies in giving the maximum
opportunity for students to be creative
and realize their inner potential,
and to give teachers the skills and
attitudes necessary to accomplish
this.
We also work closely with headmasters,
parents and other educational stakeholders
to ensure that they are in a position
where they can be most effective to
support the educational process. We
also fund several infrastructural
projects every year which include
building classrooms, toilets and water
points.

Children
GAN runs a sponsorship programme for
children from disadvantaged backgrounds
whose parents would otherwise not be
able to send them to school. In 2004
we will be introducing a scholarship
programme designed to give high-achieving
students from disadvantaged backgrounds
the opportunity to move on to higher
forms of education.
In each of our partner schools, we
also run childrens clubs
in which children have a forum where
they can discuss issues important
to them, develop their life skills,
and explore their talents through
such diverse means as drama, debate
and sport.

Youth
Each year we run a six-nine month
programme for young Nepalis. Working
alongside our field staff, the volunteers
involve themselves in all aspects
of GANs field work such giving
support to teachers and developing
the childrens clubs. GAN offers
training and skills development for
the volunteers, thereby giving thempractical
and technical knowledge to benefit
not only them but Nepal as a whole
