Introduction
Development does not start with goods;
it starts with people and their education, organisation
and discipline. For the purposes of development,
it is not simply a development of the physical infrastructure
that will contribute to sustainable development
- but the passing on of knowledge, training and
education as well. (E.F.Schumacker)
Global Action Nepal (GAN) was established in
1996 by Thomas Jelley and Chris Sowton when they
came back to the UK having spent eight months
living and working in a remote district of Nepal.
Like so many who visit Nepal, they had been touched
not only by the hospitality and generosity of
spirit that is found throughout the country, but
had also been affected by the poverty and lack
of basic services that prevail. As such, they
set up a charity, the Salleri Education Fund
(reg. no. 1067300) which provided sponsorship
and basic educational materials to many children
in the village of the same name.
The charity prospered and, in order to reflect
its growing status and wider role throughout Nepal,
it changed its name to Global Action Nepal
in 2000, and broadened its charitable objectives
and focus. Whilst it continues to actively promote
its child sponsorship programme, its scope now
encompasses areas such as youth
development, teacher
training, child
empowerment, sanitation
and school infrastructure
development.
We are a registered charity in the UK (no. 1090773)
and a registered Non-Governmental Organisation
in Nepal (no. 13712).
