Why Nepal?
Aside from the fact that the founders had a very
specific link with Nepal, there are many reasons
why GAN is focused on working in Nepal, and only
in Nepal, which are outlined below:
Nepals Economic Poverty
Nepal is the fourth poorest country in the world,
and the poorest in Asia. Even the most cursory
look at its basic indicators that 1 in
10 children die before their 5th birthday, that
40% of the population lives on less than $1 per
day, or that 70% of the country has inadequate
sanitation tells its own horrific story.
Nepals Contemporary Situation
Although it may sound counter-intuitive, the events
of Nepals recent history such as the Royal
Massacre and the Peoples War have only strengthened
GANs resolve to work for the betterment
of the Nepali people. Whilst remaining neutral
in the internal politics of the situation, GAN
hopes to play a part at using education as a means
of ensuring that the people of Nepal do not feel
that they have to use violence as a means of changing
their country, but can use education and knowledge
to challenge democratically those systems and
institutions which they feel have let them down.
The Nepali People
Anyone who has ever been to Nepal will doubtless
tell you about the friendliness and warmth of
the Nepalese people. It is partly their amazing
fortitude, strength and desire to improve their
own situation that inspires GAN both in Nepal
and the UK to fundraise for and constantly develop
projects with them.
Concentrating our Resources
Rather than attempt to look at working in other
countries and spreading our resource thinly, GAN
is dedicated to being as efficient and effective
as possible by focusing our efforts on specific
communities and areas within Nepal.
