Introduction
As a small and largely voluntary organisation,
we are very dependent on the goodwill and efforts
of our supporters in order to be able to as effective
as we can possibly be in helping our project beneficiaries
in Nepal.
There are a huge number of different ways in
which you can help GAN - be it through giving
your time, your money, attending an event, or
just by telling somebody else about what we do.
If you feel that there is something you could
do to help, we'd be very pleased to hear from
you.
Volunteer in Nepal
At present Global Action Nepal is not running
an overseas volunteers programme. However, we are
able to place volunteers with appropriate skills
and experience on short-term work placements from
time to time according to our project work in
Nepal. Should you like to know more about this
element of our work, please contact us.
In the past, Global Action has run extremely
successful overseas volunteer programmes and we
hope to be able to run this aspect of our
programme again in the future.
Volunteer in the UK
In the UK, GAN runs a group called 'Centurions',
a group of about 12 - 15 individuals who assist
GAN in various tasks that contribute significantly
to the overall success of GAN. 'Centurions' meets
every six weeks or so, and people are asked to
contribute, on average, something in the region
of two hours per week. We are always very interested
in getting new people involved, so please
contact GAN
or Anna Patterson, the Centurions co-ordinator,
if you would like to know more.
Various activities that Centurions are currently
involved in, and objectives that are currently being pursued, include:
- Fundraising
- organising events, marketing, getting sponsorship
from the corporate sector
- Publicity/Profile
Raising - raising awareness of GAN's work,
assisting with the e-newsletter, getting free
publicity in print and electronic media
- Volunteer
Recruitment - approaching universities,
assisting GAN with mailshots, attending events
where possible
- Research
- assisting with GAN's general project research
and developing our capacity and knowledge in
the UK
- Information
production - helping with developing GAN's
literature, both print and electronic
- Getting
support - promoting our cause to a wide
variety of actors and agencies, and attempting
to enlist their support, financial or otherwise,
to achieve our goals
This list is by no means exhaustive, and if you
have any ideas as to how your personal skills
and abilities could benefit GAN, please
contact us.
Attend a GAN Event
Throughout the year, GAN organises many different
events, catering for a wide range of tastes and
interests. Amongst our most popular events are
our Cultural Evenings, while
for the more adventurous or fit, GAN also has
five guaranteed places every year in the London
Marathon.
If you would like to participate in or receive
further information about any of GAN's events,
or if you are interested in hosting an event yourself
to raise money for GAN, please
e-mail us.
- London Marathon
Having a London Marathon 'Golden Bond' means that every year GAN
has five participants in the 26-mile event. Our 2006 runners are
currently in training, hoping to improve on the impressive
performances of our 2005 runners. Between them, they managed to
raise over £8,000, with ex-volunteer Jamie Woodward posting the
best time of 4 hours and 15 minutes. Please e-mail us If you are
interested in running for GAN in the 2006 marathon.
- Monopoly Walk
July 2001 saw GAN's Monopoly Walk take place
the length and breadth of London. Starting at
a café on the Old Kent Road, teams of
four raced their way around the likes of Pentonville
Road, Trafalgar Square, Mayfair and King's Cross
station. The eleven teams raised almost £2,000
for GAN's Unit Resource Centres.
- Blue Plaque Challenge
Following the success of the Monopoly Walk,
we held a similar London event the following
year. Given a map locating all the major blue
plaques in London, 40 intrepid explorers set
off with the mission to see as many as possible
in a single day. The winning team saw an impressive
67. In total, over £1,500 was raised through
the event and sponsorship.
